Keyword Cannibalization

Keyword cannibalization occurs when multiple pages on the same website target the same keyword or search intent, causing them to compete against each other in search results.

When two pages target the same keyword, Google must choose which one to rank — and it might pick the wrong one, or split authority between them so neither ranks well. This is especially common in blogs with overlapping topics and e-commerce sites with similar product categories.

Identify cannibalization by searching `site:yourdomain.com "target keyword"` in Google. If multiple pages appear, you have cannibalization. Also check Google Search Console for queries where multiple pages receive impressions.

Fix by consolidating pages (merge into one comprehensive page), differentiating intent (make each page target a distinct angle), using canonical tags (if pages must exist separately), or redirecting (301 the weaker page to the stronger one).
