AI Overview (SGE)

AI Overview (formerly Search Generative Experience / SGE) is Google's AI-powered feature that generates a synthesized answer at the top of search results, drawing from multiple web sources to directly respond to user queries.

AI Overviews represent the biggest shift in search since featured snippets. Google's AI reads, synthesizes, and summarizes content from multiple sources, presenting a comprehensive answer before any organic results. Sources are cited with small links, but click-through rates to those sources are significantly lower than traditional SERP positions.

Impact on SEO: informational queries are most affected (AI can answer "what is" questions), while transactional and tool-based queries are more resilient (AI cannot execute tools or process payments). Being cited as a source in AI Overview provides brand visibility but less traffic than traditional rankings.

Adaptation strategies: optimize for being cited (comprehensive, authoritative content with clear expertise signals), create interactive content AI cannot replicate (tools, calculators, dashboards), build direct traffic channels (email lists, communities), and focus on bottom-of-funnel content where users must visit your site to take action.
